Dentist Also Fined $10,000 and Barred from Sedating Patients
A Chicago dentist, whose five-year-old patient slipped into a fatal coma after a procedure in his office, has lost his license for a minimum of 18 months.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation also fined Dr. Hicham Riba $10,000 and permanently revoked his permit to sedate patients.
Division of Professional Regulation Director Daniel Bluthardt says it's clear that Riba failed to provide safe and professional dental care.
Diamond Brownridge never awoke from a September 23rd procedure at Riba's storefront clinic to fill cavities and cap teeth.
The Cook County medical examiner's office determined the child died from a lack of oxygen caused by anesthesia.
An agency spokeswoman says Riba can appeal for a review of the decision to a circuit court judge.
