The BiteStrip is a low cost, patient applied device that determines not only the existence, but the frequency of bruxism events while the patient is sleeping.
When patients complain of soreness in the jaw, we immediately think of over-clenching and sleep bruxism. If during examination we do not see cracked or broken teeth, or even worn areas, it becomes more difficult to determine whether a patient is bruxing or how serious the bruxism actually is. I have found a simple device that helps us effectively determine the level of bruxism a patient is actually experiencing.

The BiteStrip is a low cost, patient applied device that determines not only the existence, but the frequency of bruxism events while the patient is sleeping. This is not only a great diagnostic tool, but can also be used to pre-screen patients prior to beginning large scale restorative treatment and as a follow-up diagnistic tool.
The BiteStrip contains a microprocessor that is designed to detect and count EMG signals from the masticatory muscles. A score representing a range of events is recorded on the display. The score, interpreted by the dentist, indicates the existence and frequency of bruxing. The entire system is integrated on a small piece of lightweight plastic film attached to the user’s cheek. By analyzing the jaw muscles’ EMG waveforms in real time during the night and presenting the result on the built-in display, the device doesn’t need a large data memory, so there are no downloads or other instrumentation required to obtain the results. Test results indicate the number of bruxing events detected per hour of sleep.
* 0 - no bruxism: comparable to a sleep lab brux count of up to 39 over 5 hours
* 1 - mild: comparable to a sleep lab brux count between 40 and 74 over 5 hours
* 2 - moderate: comparable to a sleep lab brux count between 75 and 124 over 5 hours
* 3 - severe: comparable to a sleep lab brux count of more than 125 over 5 hours
* E - error in study
